Starvation Mode?

I have a hard time believing in this supposed "starvation mode" your body goes into if you don't eat enough calories.

When I eat healthy, I purposely keep track of everything I eat just out of curiosity to see how many calories it adds up to, and it's always a lot less than my daily allowance, or even what I should eat to lose weight every day.  But, if I'm full, and I don't want to eat any more, why should I just because I supposedly need to add up to a certain amount of calories?  I just don't believe it.  Which is it, eat until your full and then stop, or stuff yourself just to meet a daily average?  I think the diet industry needs to make up its mind.

When I'm eating nothing but lean meats, veggies, and fruits, and drinking plenty of water, plus taking supplements, why should I have to eat more than my body wants?  When I feel full, I'm full, period.

Anorexics don't eat nearly enough, and end up so skinny they look like they'll tip over any minute, so why don't their bodies go into "starvation mode" and store fat like the theory suggests?  I understand how their bodies will start to burn muscle instead of fat, but I'm not anorexic and am nowhere near worried my body is doing to do this, but I also don't believe I won't burn fat if I don't eat enough calories.

I feel so good when I eat so healthy.  I lose weight and am less puffy, have more energy, etc.  So, how is it that just because one day I might eat 1,000 calories or less, yet still eat enough that I'm full and satiated, that I'm supposedly not going to lose weight?  It's all a bunch of BS.  Eat healthy, drink water, eat only until you feel full and don't force yourself to eat any more, and exercise.  Sounds pretty simple to me.

Clean Eating

I find that whenever I eat right (fresh veggies, fruits, lean meats, and healthy oils -- no pasta, bread, sugar, processed foods, or starch), not only does my body feel better and I have more energy, but my mind gets clearer and my memory gets better.  I sleep better too.

I also make sure to drink more water and green tea.  Plus, I take a multivitamin, omega-3 fish oil, fenugreek, and vitamin E daily.  After the holiday naughtiness I am finally back on track. It has been two full days of clean eating and I am already seeing/feeling the changes.

Wheelchair Exercises

Exercise is important for everyone. Here is a helpful video for those who are still in a wheelchair, or even if you're not (like me), but have a weak lower body. Never Give Up

Joint Pain

My joints are starting to feel a little better since I've been taking my hypothyroid medicine again.  I am positive the weakness hypothyroidism causes was the result of my joints feeling like they were put together with strands of paper.  My magic little white pill is helping tremendously with that.

I somehow sprained my wrist the other day, but it seems to be getting better as well.  It made it more difficult to walk, since I put a lot of weight on my wrists when I grip my walker and push down, but I got through it without any kind of wrap or cuff, and taking minimal ibuprofen.

Having a sprained wrist meant I was unable to do my daily exercises, however.  No way would it be good for a sprained wrist to attempt to do push-ups.  So, I've been letting it heal and taking a break from those.  I'll get back to it when I'm sure my wrist is 100% better.

I still need to get this last 40 pounds off of my frame, and there's no better time than the present to do so.  Walking will be so much easier, and I am confident my joints will feel even better without that extra weight as well.

Time to get to it!  Heal, wrist, heal!

Two Years Ago

I was just sitting here remembering a couple years ago at this time.  I had just moved back home from FL and was staying with my friend.  All I was really able to do was sit in a dining room chair all day, getting up to go to the bathroom now and then and basically just waiting for bed time so I could lay down.  I have come so far since then, and although I feel a lot more pain and am having some issues with aching and weak joints, I am grateful of my progress and how much more I do every day.

Couch to 5K Training Plan

Never Give Up
This could be tailored to any fitness level.  I like having something structured to look at and keep me in line, so I put this up for anyone as a starting point and guideline to get up and move.  Tailor it to your fitness level/capabilities.  I will of course have to replace the jogging with walking and may have to lower the walking to just a few minutes, but I'll try five and see if I can manage.  I will no doubt have to do 5 minutes, break, and then do another five, and so on.

I found some good images for stretches.  I was really just looking for ones that I can do, so I'll put these up for now and find more later on when I can do more.  I also found a few good PT exercises that I've added to the bottom.

Hold each stretch for 30 seconds, and don't forget to breathe -

Good Hamstring and Glute Stretch

This one will be challenging, but I am going to try it.  Will not only be a good stretch, but a good balance exercise for me.

This is quite a primitive image, but full of great stretches.  Click on it for a larger and easier to read version.

Found this on a PT website.  Great strength and balance exercises for those of us with limited movement.  I'll be adding these to my dailies.

And just another great PT routine.  Some are similar to those above, but doesn't hurt to have as much information as possible.

My Everest

The ramp at the local park for going around the stairs to get to the top of the hill.  It takes me a good 10 minutes or more to climb this, and I have to rest at the top on the bench, but I love the workout it gives.  Would love to start doing the stairs one day!

Never Give Up

Today I will be doing some stretching.  This is something I have not done enough of over the years, and it has definitely taken its toll.  Along with doing my dailies, I need to add in some stretching, no matter how light.  It increases circulation and stimulates the muscles.  That's always a good thing for someone in my condition.

I have been in a lot of pain lately, too.  More so than usual.  It almost feels as if I have arthritis setting in to every single one of my joints, but I think it's just from lack of my thyroid medicine.  I haven't had it in months, but it's here now so we will see if the pain starts to subside.  I know that hypothyroidism makes everything weak, so it's quite possible the pain is from ligaments and tendons being even weaker than I am used to, and because I'm as active as I am, it's causing strain and pain.  If not, then I have arthritis now too.  We can just add that to the list of things I get to tell to F*** off every day when I wake up ;-) (after I wince and cry and it takes me 10 minutes to actually get up, of course)

So, I'm going to do some stretching today.  I'll post some good leg stretches for you.  Then I'm going to do my dailies (30 crunches, 20 push ups, 10 squats).  Maybe I'll even get real ambitious and go climb my hill at the park! (I'll post a pic of that, too).  And, when I say ambitious, I mean if I take enough Ibuprofen that I can actually stand the stair climb and subsequent "stroll" to my car to get to the park to then make the trek up the hill.
